DESCRIPTION
The Gokyo Valley Trek presents a captivating alternative to the popular Everest Base Camp Trek. This route ventures into the western valley of Everest, leading to the village of Gokyo and its stunning array of five sacred lakes nestled alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier. Comparable to the Everest Base Camp Trek in its awe-inspiring views of Everest, this journey offers a quieter, less crowded experience, winding through traditional Sherpa villages where local meals replenish weary trekkers. Traversing along the Dudh Koshi River to its origin, trekkers are greeted by the mesmerizing emerald-green lakes, with Gokyo village nestled beside the largest among them. The pinnacle of the trek is the ascent to Gokyo Ri at 5360 meters, offering a breathtaking panorama encompassing Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Cholatse, and Taboche, a sight that will undoubtedly leave trekkers spellbound.
ITINERARY

Known as the gateway to the Everest region, Lukla offers a thrilling start to your adventure with a breathtaking flight amidst the majestic Himalayas. Upon touchdown in Lukla and a brief pause, commence your trek.
Following a descending path, you’ll soon arrive at the picturesque village of Cheplung. From here, take in the awe-inspiring sight of Mt. Khumbila, revered as the “God of Khumbu”. This sacred peak, though alluring, remains untouched as climbing it is prohibited, adding to its mystique as one of the few unclimbed summits in the region. Continuing your journey from Cheplung, traverse through lush woodlands along a descending trail that leads you onward to Phakding.
Day 2: Trek to Namche
Today’s journey takes you to Namche Bazaar, the vibrant Sherpa capital and economic heart of the region, offering a range of amenities from basic necessities to more luxurious comforts. Begin your trek by immersing yourself in the dense wilderness of the Khumbu region, passing through the quaint hamlets of Zamphute and Tok Tok.
As you traverse uphill and downhill trails, crossing several suspension bridges spanning the roaring waters of the Dudh Koshi River, be sure to savor the awe-inspiring sight of Mt. Thamserku towering above at 21,675 feet. Your path will lead you through the settlements of Benkar and Chumoa, each offering glimpses into the local way of life.
Continuing onward, you’ll arrive at the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park in Monjo, where your permits will be checked before you embark on an uphill climb towards Namche Bazaar. Ascending steep paths and crossing a high bridge with panoramic views of the Dudh Koshi River gorge below, you’ll gradually gain elevation, rewarded with majestic vistas of Everest, Lhotse, Tawache, and other towering peaks.
Upon reaching Namche Bazaar, make your way to your accommodation for a well-deserved rest, soaking in the unique atmosphere of this bustling mountain town.
Day 3: Acclimatize at Namche Bazaar
Today marks the first day of acclimatization, a crucial step in preparing your body for higher altitudes where the air is thinner. Proper acclimatization is essential for allowing your body to adjust gradually to the reduced oxygen levels.
Embark on various small hikes in and around Namche Bazaar to aid in the acclimatization process. Begin by hiking up to the renowned Everest View Hotel, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the Himalayan panorama. Take in the awe-inspiring sight of the landscape adorned with evergreen fir trees, lush shrubs, and endless stretches of rhododendron forests. From the hotel’s vantage point, revel in a 360-degree view of the majestic Himalayas, an experience that is sure to leave you spellbound.
On your return journey to Namche Bazaar, make a stop at the Khumjung Monastery, renowned for housing what is believed to be a Yeti scalp. Explore the ancient monastery and immerse yourself in its rich history and cultural significance.
Continuing your exploration, visit the Tourist Visitor Center located near the headquarters of Sagarmatha National Park. Here, delve into a fascinating array of exhibits and information related to the first Everest ascenders, Sherpa culture, and the diverse biodiversity of the Everest region.
By engaging in these small hikes and cultural explorations, you’ll not only facilitate your body’s acclimatization process but also gain deeper insights into the rich heritage and natural wonders of the Everest region.
Day 4: Trek to Phortse Thenga
Embark on your journey by ascending a steep incline out of the valley, winding through the lush wilderness of rhododendron and juniper. As you ascend, the landscape undergoes a transformation, with patches of large conifers and shrubs dotting the terrain. Today’s trek covers a distance of 5.7 kilometers or 3.5 miles, promising an enriching experience amidst the natural beauty of the Himalayas.
As you traverse along the trail, immerse yourself in the authentic culture of the Sherpa people, gaining insights into their way of life and traditions. The path leads you across Yak Kharka, a high alpine pastureland and summer settlement for local villages. Here, amidst panoramic views of Ama Dablam and other majestic snowy peaks, you’ll find yourself amidst the serene beauty of the Himalayan landscape.
Continuing onwards, you’ll arrive at the settlement of Mong, distinguished by a large white Gompa, or monastery. This village holds significance as the birthplace of the Khumbu saint, Lama Sangwan Dorje, adding a spiritual dimension to your journey.
After a brief descent from Mong, you’ll catch sight of Phortse Thenga village across the river. Following the trail along the riverside, you’ll eventually arrive at this quaint riverside settlement, where you can unwind and soak in the tranquil surroundings after a day of trekking through the picturesque Khumbu region.
Day 5: Trek to Machhermo
Today’s trek is a challenging one, leading you to higher altitudes where the air becomes thinner. It’s crucial to proceed with caution, taking it slow and ensuring you rest frequently to acclimatize properly.
Begin by departing from Phortse Thenga, ascending along a ridge section that offers stunning views down the valley towards Kangtega and up towards Cho Oyu. As you progress, you’ll find yourself traversing on high alpine terrain where the tree line gradually disappears, providing you with uninterrupted vistas of the Himalayas that will leave you in awe.
Continuing on your journey, you’ll descend towards the river, crossing it before embarking on a tough uphill section. As you ascend, you’ll gradually gain altitude, eventually finding yourself traversing the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. The rugged beauty of the glacier’s moraine landscape will captivate you as you make your way through this otherworldly terrain.
Following the moraine, you’ll eventually arrive at the tiny hamlet of Machhermo. Nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas, Machhermo offers a serene retreat where you can replenish your energy and reflect on the day’s adventures amidst the awe-inspiring beauty of the Khumbu region.
Day 6: Trek to Gokyo

Along the way, soak in breathtaking vistas of the Ngozumpa glacier and the majestic peaks of Khumjung and Khunde.
Venture further, traversing high alpine terrain painted with arid landscapes, where hues of brown and grey dominate the scenery. As you progress, navigate across glacier-fed streams and river networks, culminating in a steep ascent towards the settlement of Gokyo.
In the days ahead, immerse yourself in the wonders of Gokyo, exploring its marvels and embracing the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Day 7: Explore around Gokyo
Today’s adventure takes you deep into the wonders of the Gokyo region. Begin your day before dawn to witness the awe-inspiring Himalayan sunrise. After a hearty breakfast, set out to explore the enchanting series of Gokyo Lakes.
Nestled in this region is the world’s highest freshwater lake system, comprising six main lakes and surrounding wetlands spanning 7,770 hectares (30.0 sq mi), a designated Ramsar site. These lakes hold immense cultural significance, drawing Hindu and Buddhist devotees during various festivals.
Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the emerald-green lakes, absorbing their revitalizing energy. Start by exploring the three lakes in close proximity to the tea house. Then, journey towards the fourth Gokyo Lake, located 3 kilometers north of Gokyo Village. Continue your trek to the fifth lake, where the breathtaking ‘Scoundrel’s Viewpoint’ awaits. From here, marvel at the majestic panorama of Cho-Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu mountains, along with the sprawling Ngozumba Glacier.
Spend the day leisurely strolling around the lakes, immersing yourself in their serenity and visiting other sacred sites. After a day filled with exploration and wonder, return to the settlement to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures.
Day 8: Hike to Gokyo Ri
The highlight of the Gokyo Valley Trek undoubtedly lies in the ascent of Gokyo Ri, offering an unparalleled vantage point for mesmerizing mountain views. Begin your journey by traversing across the stream at the northern end of the village, then embark on an uphill trek that will lead you to the summit of Gokyo Ri. This ascent typically takes a couple of hours and culminates at a point adorned with a colorful array of prayer flags.
While the climb itself is non-technical, the altitude may pose a challenge for some, so it’s essential to proceed at a steady pace and take frequent breaks to acclimate. Upon reaching the summit, prepare to be awestruck by the breathtaking panoramic views that unfold before you. Marvel at the majestic peaks of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, and Taboche, with the imposing Ngozumpa Glacier slicing through the landscape like a colossal tear.
Take a moment to soak in the serene beauty of the series of emerald-green lakes below. Upon reaching Lukla, rest for a while. Later celebrate the success of your trek and the last night in the mountains with your team members.
