overview

Mikumi National Park, established in 1964, is a gem among Tanzania Destinations, attracting Art in Tanzania volunteers and interns due to its accessibility and reasonable pricing. Covering an impressive 3,230 square kilometres (1,250 square miles), it ranks as the fourth-largest national park in Tanzania and forms an integral part of the broader ecosystem centered on the renowned Selous Game Reserve. Situated approximately 283 kilometres (175 miles) west of Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park lies north of Selous and lies en route to other enticing destinations like Ruaha, Udzungwa, and Katavi, making it a convenient and strategic stop on any safari itinerary.

The landscape of Mikumi is often compared to the famous Serengeti Plains, offering visitors a taste of its open horizons and abundant wildlife. The park is divided into two distinct areas by a traversing road. The northwestern region boasts a sandy plain, dominated by the Mkata River basin, adorned with a picturesque savannah dotted with acacia, baobab, tamarind, and rare palm trees. Here, the majestic mountains of Rubeho and Uluguru provide a breathtaking backdrop, especially for those who venture beyond away from the road.

Mikumi’s allure lies in its promise of spotting the renowned ‘Big Five’ – cheetah, lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. Among its attractions are the hippo pools, where visitors can get up close to these mud-loving beasts, and the waterways teeming with diverse birdlife, providing an excellent opportunity for birdwatching enthusiasts. Mikumi National Park’s game-viewing roads offer a well-developed network to explore the wonders of nature. The Mkata Floodplain is a haven for the eland, the world’s largest antelope, and the impressive greater kudu and sable antelope, which inhabit the foothills of the surrounding mountains.

More than 400 bird species have been recorded, Mikumi delights birdwatchers with its diverse avian population. Residents like the vibrant lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, and bateleur eagle, along with European migrants during the rainy season, provide a fascinating sight for keen observers. For the best wildlife viewing experience, the Dry season, from June to October, is recommended. During this period, animals gather around reliable water sources, such as the Mkata River and the hippo pools, making it easier to spot buffalo herds, elephants, and other wildlife.
