MOUNT MERU CLIMBING

Mount Meru is an awe-inspiring climbing adventure located in the heart of Arusha National Park, Tanzania. As the second-highest peak in Tanzania and the fifth-tallest in Africa, this massive volcano stands at 14,980 feet high, offering breathtaking views across Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb is often used as a warm-up for Kilimanjaro and presents a challenging ascent with fewer climbers, providing a more intimate and immersive experience.

The climb typically takes at least 4 days to allow for acclimatization and to fully appreciate the stunning scenery along the way. Unlike traditional camping, hikers stay in huts during the journey, making it a unique and comfortable experience. Explore the presence of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, and buffalo, which can be spotted throughout the national park.

The ideal time for the Mount Meru climb is from June to February. However, November may bring some rain, while December to February is considered the best time to witness Mount Meru in all its glory. Mount Meru is a dormant volcanic peak, shaped by a major eruption over 500,000 years ago. The summit sits on the volcano’s western rim, featuring a striking 1,500-meter (4,900-foot) deep crater.

The Climb Mount Meru‘s summit does require a relatively high level of physical fitness, but only simple scrambling is necessary to reach the top. With an elevation change of 3,170 meters (10,400 feet) from the base to the summit, the climb serves as an excellent acclimatization opportunity for those planning to tackle Mount Kilimanjaro.

The main route to the summit is the Momella route, starting from Momella Gate to the east of the mountain. The ascent begins with a picturesque hike through savannah and tropical rainforests, gradually transitioning into volcanic terrain as climbers approach the summit. Along the way, hikers pass through Miriakamba Hut and ascend through steep forests and bushes before reaching the top.

The final part of the climb involves passing by the minor summit of Little Meru and Rhino Point before facing one last scrambling ascent to the western rim and the summit. From the top, climbers are rewarded with stunning panoramic views, including glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro, making the entire journey an unforgettable experience for any adventurous soul.
